How to Join The Fight Against Cancer

Even just the possibility of cancer is a life-altering word. Although remarkable progress regarding detection and treatment of the disease has been made in recent years, the fear that naturally surfaces is very real.

With the 4th of February being World Cancer Day, let us take a look at cancer, and how we can join the fight against cancer.

Cancer Now

Although statistical trends are not directly relevant to individual patients, they provide a better understanding of the effect of cancer on the population, and are used to measure the success of projects to control and manage cancer.

According to the World Health Organisation:

  • The number of new cases is expected to rise by about 70% over the next 2 decades.
  • Among men, the 5 most common sites of cancer diagnosed in 2012 were lung, prostate, colorectum, stomach, and liver cancer.
  • Among women, the 5 most common sites diagnosed were breast, colorectum, lung, cervix, and stomach cancer.

There are four stages of breast cancer, determined by taking into account various factors:

  • The size of the tumour.
  • Whether cancer cells have spread into the nearby lymph glands.
  • Whether the tumour has spread to any other part of the body (metastasised.

The stage is important to know because it helps your breast cancer specialist to decide on the best breast cancer treatment for you.

How to fight cancer

Around one third of cancer deaths are due to these behavioural and dietary risks:

  • tobacco use - the most important risk factor for cancer causing around 20% of global cancer deaths and around 70% of global lung cancer deaths
  • being overweight or obese
  • unhealthy diet with low fruit and vegetable intake
  • lack of physical activity
  • alcohol use
  • sexually transmitted HPV-infection
  • urban air pollution
  • indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels.

Prevention is never a given, but by avoiding the factors above as far as possible, you will increase your chance of fighting this dread disease.
